Jan 27th 2008 Jack Ascii’s Sunday Night Read

WastelandI just picked up “Wastelands - Stories of the Apocalypse” this week. I love this stuff. Not exactly sure why, but I dig it. I like the books, the movies, and the video games. I’ll give my full update on this book once I get done (I’m a slow reader, so it ain’t going to be tomorrow). Until then, here are some post-apocalyptic items I can recommend:

Games: Wasteland (This is a no brainer folks - it is the best game ever! Check out the Ranger HQ for downloads), Fallout 1, Fallout 2

Movies: A Boy and His Dog, Postman, I Am Legend, 28 Days Later (but not 28 Weeks Later)

Books: The Postman, Night Surf (Stephen King short story), The Road, and the Walking Dead (comic book series)

I heard that there is a short movie of Night Surf somewhere on the Internet. If anyone knows its where abouts, I would be very appreciative of the information. Just send me an email at me ‘at’ jackascii.net.

Jan 26th 2008 Jack Ascii’s Technofunky Update - The TiddlyWikis Edition

Question: Would you like a wiki to store all the random crap you think about during day that can be run off of the common thumbdrive?

If your answer is no, then please dismiss your self from this entry and go read this mystery link (just click it, take a chance, it could be SFW or it could get your fired. What are you, chicken?)

If you answered yes, then I suggest that you give TiddlyWiki (the reusable non-linear personal web notebook) a shot.  Quite possibly the easiest wiki to install, ever!. I downloaded the “emtpy.html” file, slapped it on my thumbdrive, clicked on the file, and I was wiki’ing it up. I even installed the a new theme (from TiddlyThemes.com). This was as easy as downloading the theme (GTD by Clint Checketts) and clicking the Import tab (shown once you click on the backstage tab up in the upper right corner of the wiki). I highly recommend giving the TiddlyWiki a try. I like to say the word TiddlyWiki. I do not recommend asking anyone to check out your TiddlyWiki if you are in the restroom.

Jan 26th 2008 Jack Ascii’s Mass Media Update - Bazooka Tooth Edition

AesopRockIf you haven’t heard of Aesop Rock, me and you had something in common up until November last year. I’m a fan of Hip Hop (but don’t label me as just a Hip Hop fan, as I like it all sans country). I pretty much own every Public Enemy and Beastie Boys album out there, but you can also catch me listening to anything from Kanye, to the Pharcyde, to Del the Funky Homosapien. Anyway, in November I finally came across this fella called Aesop Rock. My first listen was his “Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives (2005)” album which I picked up off of iTunes. I was blown away. For about three straight weeks this album was just about the only thing getting airtime on my iPod. Since November, I have picked up the Daylight EP, Labor Days, None Shall Pass, Bazooka Tooth, and the Nike Original Run remix albums.

Why I dig Aesop Rock: Beats are fantastic, but this guy really shines from a lyrical standpoint. Here are just a couple of samples:”

But man those wings will never leave the ground, without a feather and a lottery ticket, now settle down… (DayLight from Labor Days and the Daylight EP)

My name is something hands can’t hold but hearts part ocean scapes just to watch the starlet unfold (Battery from Labor Days)

Songs to check out on iTunes (my personal fav’s from each album):

Bazooka Tooth - The Greatest Pac-Man Victory in History, LimeLighters

 DayLight EP - Maintenance, DayLight

Labor Days - Daylight, Battery, Boombox

Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives - Fast Cars, Number Nine

None Shall Pass - None Shall Pass, The Harbor is Yours, Coffee, Pigs

Nike + Original Run - There’s only one song on this album. I’d hold off on this one till you check out the others.

I’ll leave you with some lyrical creativity from the hidden track at the end of the DayLight EP album. This track (1 of 4 - Thank You) starts of with this intro, all delivered by way of one of those text to speech programs (a computer voice):

My name is Ian Mathias Bavitz, I was born in 1976 at Biosfet hospital located in Long Island, New York, I am  foot four, I weigh 200 pounds, I have brown hair and green eyes, I enjoy writing songs, painting, movies and diner food, I have two brothers, Chris and Graham, and two parents, Paul and Jameija, In August of 2001 I went crazy..“ Then Aesop starts in…

For more information, check out Aesop’s Myspace page. I refuse to link to it cause I think myspace sucks. However, its the first page that comes up when you google ‘Aesop Rock’.

Jan 21st 2008 Tiki Barber is a Jackass….

Hey Tiki, Eli Manning and the Giants are in the Superbowl. How bout them apples? Here’s a sample of what Tiki had to say (from the cheap seats) earlier this year:

Speaking during the halftime show of the Sunday Night Football game between the Giants and Baltimore Ravens, Barber had said that Manning’s attempt to lead an offensive meeting in the 12th week of the last season was “comical” at times.”

This just in, Manning has been brilliant in the post season and has lead his team to three straight victories in consecutive weeks as a Wild Card team (Didn’t the Raiders do that one year). How long before you return to your jackass ways and start turning on Roper and Lauer?

Misc Debris

  • During the 2002 season, Tiki fumbled 8 times, with the opposing team getting 6 of them.
  • During the 2003 season, Tiki fumbled 9 times, with the opposing team getting 6 of them.
  • Tiki Barber is the second best football player in his family.
  • Tiki is a name given to large carvings of humanoid form.
  • Tiki sucks at being a teammate.
  • Tiki sucks.

Jan 21st 2008 Craigslist, not just a way for cheapskates to sell crap anymore…

This is some pure reading pleasure. Please, please check out the Bart Fartist. Here’s a sample:

The ambient noise from the tunnel meant I was able to really make you shiver when I delivered, I am actually shocked that a burnt hole wasn’t left in the back of my pants. It was one of my fall specials, a preseason pumpkin fart that smells for five minutes.”

Jan 21st 2008 Charter Communications Sucks Again

Bandwidth speed tests indicate that my connection is roughly 100kbps. Funny, since I am paying for a 3Mbps connection. Thanks Charter. This is making Halo 3 virtually unplayable.

Jan 18th 2008 Knoxville’s Red Light Shooter - Need to Know

redlightcam.jpegIf you live in Knoxville, Tennessee, this is some need to know information. I just found out about this guy after checking out a recent post over at Les Jones’s spiffy blogtackular site. Allegedly this fella shot out one of Knoxville’s red light camera’s with a .30-06 caliber hunting rifle after falling victim to it a little while earlier. For this he was snatched up by the fuzz and spent a few nights in the pen. He describes the whole event on his website (cliffspeaks.com). Excellent read which I highly recommended. Here is a sample of the story which I particularly was fond of:

I shared a cell with an illegal alien.  He didn’t speak English, and mi Espanol es mui malo.  So we engaged in mutual language lessons.  Before we parted, I tore paper from a bag lunch and I wrote the message, “Guest of Clifford Clark.”  I included my contact information.  I stuffed the note in his shirt pocket since he was about to be deported and I anticipate he will be coming back to the U.S.  I hope he doesn’t run any red lights on the way back.”

The original story can be found at KnoxNews
